Common problems & symptoms
Problems and symptoms reported for this transmission, compiled from repair sources. Not a complete list.
!
Forward clutch piston cracking
The aluminum forward clutch piston commonly cracks, causing the forward clutch to disengage and the transmission to feel like it's in neutral; Ford switched to a steel piston in 1995 to fix this.
!
Insufficient lubrication / geartrain meltdown
Inadequate pressurized lube oil supply to the geartrain is a primary cause of transmission failure in earlier units, tied to internal lubrication problems.
?
No forward or reverse engagement
The transmission intermittently fails to engage forward or reverse gears, sometimes recovering after the vehicle sits for a period.
