Swindon Powertrain Develops New EV powertrain

Swindon Powertrain (SP) is currently working on a new compact 80kW “crate” e-powertrain that is supposed to simplify the process of electrification for OE manufacturers, who are looking for space-saving and efficient powertrain systems for EV applications. Thanks to financial support cooperation with several companies, SP’s project will result in a crate transverse solution with the highest power/volume ratio on the market.

The new solution is so compact and lightweight (only 70 kg) that the motor, inverter, single-speed gearbox and cooling unit assembly can be easily mounted under the hood of a classic Mini. As part of this project, SP engineers will work on special tooling and determine production techniques to launch the product production in the summer of next year. The main stages of R&D and acceptance testing will be covered by the program, thereby reducing development expenditures further for customers.

Today, if is quite a challenging task for many OEMs to find a powertrain solution that can be supplied in low volumes and be installed without additional costs. Therefore, SP put in great efforts to fill this promising niche on the market. This initiative follows SP’s earlier program aimed at the electrification of an original Mini, embedding a new and durable EV system into extremely limited installation space.

Thanks to a high degree of adjustability, the new powertrain may find application in different types of vehicles. Founded in 1971, SP is a major provider of road and race engines and other powertrain elements.
