VW Promotes Jetta GLI’s Manual Transmission As An Anti-Theft Device

While a large proportion of the automobile industry gradually shifts from manual transmissions to much more comfortable automatics, some carmakers still produce car models equipped with a gear stick. These models, such as the Volkswagen Jetta GLI, are intended for admirers of cars equipped with manuals, but Volkswagen has decided to go even further and started to advertise the GLI’s gear stick as an anti-theft system.

In the latest TV advertising released by the German carmaker, two guys are shown driving the stylish Jetta model burning up the urban road. When they stop and get out of the car, the driver doesn’t trouble himself with locking the car, his bewildered friend asks if it would be better to lock the car. Then the driver calmly replied the following: “Nah, it’s a stick shift”. The passenger was very surprised by such an attitude from his friend and asked him again several times whether he was sure about his decision.

But the most comical bit in this advertising comes when both friends are walking away from the car, at this moment the following phrase appears on the screen: “Legally we have to tell you that you should always lock your car, so you should lock your car”.

Undoubtedly, such actions of the driver should not be taken seriously, but it is not said in vain that there's some truth behind every joke. There were plenty of c ases, when awkward carjackers were taken by surprise by the fact that the car they try to steal is equipped with a gear stick.
