Transmission stays in 3rd gear or has reduced/no 4th gear drive capability due to leakage or hydraulic circuit problems.

Valve body orange checkball failure
A 5/16" orange checkball in the valve body wears and can blow through the separator plate, causing a very harsh 4-3 kickdown.

Direct clutch piston checkball leak
A leaking checkball in the direct clutch piston causes pressure loss in the direct clutch circuit, preventing proper 3-4 upshifts.
