Main forward clutch (C1) failure
The C1 main forward clutch carries the full engine load during the 5-4 kickdown shift; with elevated torque it can slip and weld on permanently, causing loss of 5th gear and requiring an overhaul.

Line pressure (SLT) solenoid rough downshift
When the Main Pressure/Line Pressure (SLT) solenoid fails to actuate correctly, insufficient hydraulic pressure causes the TCM to force a harsh downshift when coasting to a stop.
