The Direct and Forward clutch friction discs wear out over high mileage; the resulting burnt fluid then causes erratic operation of the remaining, still-serviceable clutches.

When the ATF has become badly burnt, the intermediate (2nd) brake band is typically also worn and needs replacement during overhaul.
