Early units, especially Phaeton applications and BMW E65s, had failure-prone mechatronic control units that went into fail-safe mode and were often replaced under warranty.

Mechatronic adapter seal cracking
The plastic adapter/seal between the mechatronic unit and the pump can crack in cold weather, dropping line pressure and causing cold-shift problems or fault codes.

Short-lived bushings and leaks
A recognized weak point of this transmission family is premature wear of internal bushings and associated oil leaks.
