Common problems & symptoms
Problems and symptoms reported for this transmission, compiled from repair sources. Not a complete list.
!
Oil pump bushing wear/leak
Extended operation with a worn torque converter lockup clutch wears out the oil pump bushing, leading to pressure loss, seal leakage and pump noise.
?
Friction clutch slipping/burning smell
Overheated or rarely changed ATF leads to friction clutch pack slippage, lost gears and a burnt smell.
?
B1 brake clutch pack burns
The B1 brake friction pack and its steel plates are the most commonly burnt clutch components found during repair of this unit.
?
C1/C3 clutch packs burn
Depending on valve body calibration, the C1 forward clutch and C3 reverse clutch packs can burn instead of B1.
!
Torque converter lockup clutch wear
Active or aggressive driving accelerates wear of the torque converter lockup clutch, contaminating the ATF with friction debris and causing vibration or shudder.
!
Oil pump bushing and seal wear
Prolonged oil starvation and torque-converter lock-up wear first damages the oil pump bushing and seal before friction clutches start to burn.
