ZF 9HP48
9 speed transverse ZF 9HP48 for the front drive was released in 2013 at two factories: in Saarbrücken for Europe and by Chrysler in Kokomo (USA) for Japanese and American cars - Honda and Chrysler. Both versions have significant differences in the range of spare parts and major components because Chrysler made plenty of changes in its version . It was tested on the American market and there were mostly problems with computer settings and electrics. Common problems & symptoms
Problems and symptoms reported for this transmission, compiled from repair sources. Not a complete list.
!
Solenoid Group Wear Failure
Solenoids wear as a group due to contaminated oil and worn sealing rings, failing collectively around the same time.
!
Sealing Rings Wear Out
Worn-out sealing rings accelerate solenoid degradation and contribute to overall transmission deterioration.
?
Burnt ATF Smell
Smell of burnt ATF indicates severe internal damage and is a trigger indicator for full transmission overhaul.
?
Metal Grit In ATF
Presence of metal particles approximately 1mm in size in ATF signals need for major overhaul even if gearbox runs normal
!
Contaminated ATF Damage
Prolonged driving with contaminated oil causes rapid wear of solenoids and internal sealing components.
!
Electrical And Computer Issues
Chrysler 948TE version exhibited frequent problems with computer settings and electrical components on the American mark
!
ATF Service Complexity Risk
ATF change is technically difficult; improper service by inexperienced technicians risks transmission damage.

About this transmission
Transmission general data
9 speed transverse ZF 9HP48 for the front drive was released in 2013 at two factories: in Saarbrücken for Europe and by Chrysler in Kokomo (USA) for Japanese and American cars - Honda and Chrysler. Both versions have significant differences in the range of spare parts and major components because Chrysler made plenty of changes in its version . It was tested on the American market and there were mostly problems with computer settings and electrics. ZF9HP48 is designed to transfer the torque from the engine up to 480 Nm, but as all transmissions with transverse positioning it is much less endurable to extreme stress and therefore it is installed on urban jeeps.9 gears are only required when the vehicle passes half a day at the 1st gear in urban traffic and when out of traffic it immediately gets on the freeway where the 9th gear serves to save fuel.
Technical issues and repair guidelines
Rebuilding of a transmission is always made with a repair kit consisting of gaskets and seals (overhaul kit). In this case the filter is replaced as well .Prolonged driving with contaminated oil and worn-out sealing rings leads to rapid wear of solenoids, which operate evenly as a group and also a group fail around the same time period. But it actually requires a long time to have the solenoids fully unconditional.
ATF change is quite difficult and requires experience in automatic transmissions, especially with the 6-speed and 8-speed ZF automatics. Smell of burnt ATF or presence of metal grit of around 1mm is considered to be an indicator for a major overhaul of the automatic transmission even if the gearbox runs flawlessly.
